Pelvic floor dysfunction is a common condition where you’re unable to correctly relax and coordinate the muscles in your pelvic floor to urinate or to have a bowel movement. If you’re a woman, you may also feel pain during sex, and if you’re a man you may have problems having or keeping an erection.
SYMPTOMS:
- Urinary issues, such as the urge to urinate or painful urination
- Constipation or bowel strains
- Lower back pain
- Pain in the pelvic region, genitals, or rectum
- Discomfort during sexual intercourse for women
- Pressure in the pelvic region or rectum
- Muscle spasms in the pelvis
SIGNS OF A PELVIC FLOOR PROBLEM
- Accidentally leaking urine when you exercise, laugh, cough or sneeze
- Needing to get to the toilet in a hurry or not making it there in time
- Constantly needing to go to the toile
- Finding it difficult to empty your bladder or bowel
- Accidentally losing control of your bladder or bowel
- Accidentally passing wind
- A prolapse
- In women, this may be felt as a bulge in the vagina or a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, pulling, dragging or dropping
- In men, this may be felt as a bulge in the rectum or a feeling of needing to use their bowels but not actually needing to
- Pain in your pelvic area
- Painful sex
