Kyphosis is an exaggerated, forward rounding of the back. kyphosis is often due to weakness in the spinal bones that causes them to compress or crack. Other types of kyphosis can appear in infants or teens due to malformation of the spine or wedging of the spinal bones over time.
SYMPTOMS:
Patients may also notice a difference in their appearance prompting further evaluation. The most common area to feel back pain related to kyphosis is in the mid back, or thoracic spine. Other common symptoms include:
- Back pain or stiffness
- Shortness of breath or breathing difficulty
- Changes in appearance (more rounding of shoulder blades, hunchback)
- Poor posture
- Inability to lay completely flat
- Sometimes associated with radiating pain into arms or legs
